Rhododendrons

Last December we had a horrific ice storm in Central Massachusetts. We lost numerous hardwood trees, some pines and a lot of shrubs and perennials. We were without power for 5 days (we have an artesian well and a septic tank) so it was lots of fun in the freezing temperatures. Some of the towns nearby were without power for 2 weeks. There was a lot of damage to our barn and house and my son's car was totaled because two trees fell on it. This is all that remained of my rhododendrons.

Roses and Peonies

Roses and peonies were beautiful this year in early June before all the rain. We've had only 5 days without rain in New England this June.

Pink Clematis

This is the first year in 5 years that I've had blossoms on my Clematis. All of my gardening manuals from organic gardening to Crockett's Victory Garden said not to lime clematis. Guess what? My soil is very acidic due to pine trees. This year somebody called up on the Paul Rogers radio program in Worcester, MA and asked him about clematis. He said put lots of lime on them - so I did it also - and voila!

This is the first year I have planted heirloom plants and heirloom seeds. The seeds germinated faster than others we've used in the past and the plants from The Tasteful Garden that I planted in my herb garden are much larger than the ones we usually use (as in our usual garden).
